India won a repeatedly rain-infested game by six wickets and with one ball to spare thanks a captain’s innings by M.S.Dhoni. India won the toss and elected to field first due to the overcast conditions and the problems with the Duckworth-Lewis system later.dhoni

Chris Gayle started with a bang, smashing the very first over from Ishant Sharma for ten runs, but a rain delay later, he was consumed by Ashish Nehra. Runako Morton did continue with his good form, but it was half century by Ramnaresh Sarwan and his associations with first Morton and then Shivnaraine Chanderpaul that looked to have brought the hosts to 125/3 in the 19th over and in sights of the 200 run mark off the allocated 27 overs. Incidentally, it had been rain interruptions that reduced the overs from 50 to 41 to 39 to 36 to finally 27!

Sarwan’s run-out – his second needless one in three games – slowed the innings down and in the end, the Caribbean managed 186/7 in the 27.

The target was upped to 195 in the 27 overs due to the DL system, but the Indians had a good start from Gautam Gambhir and Dinesh Karthik. The pair added 84 for the first wicket in only 12 overs, with Karthik getting to 47 before being run-out. Gambhir was fortunate with his edges and nicks in the beginning but played on to get to 37, before rain interrupted again to leave India at 95/1 in 13.3 overs.

The target was reduced to 159 off 22 overs, which looked quite gettable but it repeatedly started getting stiff as only five came off the penultimate Dwayne Bravo over. 11 runs were needed in six balls, and Yusuf Pathan took a single to rotate the strike back to Dhoni. With ten needed off five, Dhoni probably hit the most significant six of his career to get the equation in his favour and the Indians won with a ball to spare!
