West Indies rout India at Jamaica, series at 1-1
India, West Indies | 198 VIEWS | June 28, 2009 at 5:36 pmWest Indies easily disposed off the Indian side in the second ODI at Kingston in Jamaica by eight wickets to level the series at 1-1. This was mainly due to a concerted bowling effort by the West Indian pace attack, and a savage hitting from Chris Gayle and a calm and controlled inning by Runako Morton.
M.S. Dhoni won the toss again and decided to bat first, but the Indian top order struggled again. This time around, it was the swing that took care of Dinesh Karthik, Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma, as India slumped to 7/3 by the second over; Ravi Rampaul capturing two wickets.
There was a decent, little partnership between Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, but the wicket of Yuvi brought about another collapse. From 54/3, the Indians were reduced to 82/8 and in the danger of getting out before half their overs were up. Dhoni himself was there at the crease, but there hardly looked any hope with R.P.Singh at the other end.
However, Dhoni began to farm the strike, and R.P. Singh grew in confidence to add 101 runs for the ninth wicket, as India recovered to score 188 all out. Dhoni scored a valiant 95 and was unlucky not to get to his fifth century. Rampaul captured 4/37 in his ten overs.
In reply, Gayle and Morton began as only they could and slaughtered the Indian bowling to all around the park. The captain smashed a quickfire 64(48), but even his wicket at 101 in the 16th over didn’t stall the scoring.
In the end, Ramnaresh Sarwan did gift Rohit Sharma his second wicket, but it wasn’t enough to stop the West Indians from winning the game. Morton remained unbeaten on 85, while Chanderpaul scored 18. West Indies won with almost 16 overs to spare.
Presentation Ceremony:
Ravi Rampaul, the Man of the Match: It’s good to get wickets and yeah, it has been a good comeback. I have worked hard and it has come off well. I was focussed to bowl at the right areas.
Gayle: Taylor and Rampaul set up the game for us. We utilised the wicket and the conditions very well, our catching was good too. Credit to Dhoni and RP for hanging in there. Runako is batting well, it’s good to be getting scores at the top.
Dhoni: We should have given more respect to the bowlers, we just didn’t assess the surface properly and went on playing our strokes. Yuvi has been getting runs for us but then expecting one player to do it all the time is wrong.
West Indies win by 8 wickets to draw level in the 4 match ODI series, 1-1 now!
